And the list goes on. The star-nosed mole continues to surprise us. Among other things, it is one of the fastest eaters in the world. In just 8 milliseconds, it is able to identify whether what it has come across is edible. And that is truly an over-the-top speed of nerves! The mole has 22 projections (11 pairs) growing around the circumference of its nose, which is about 1 cm in diameter. These projections are mobile and serve as tactile receptors. They are also found in other species of moles, but never to the same extent as in the star-nosed mole. The star on its snout makes the tiny creature a record holder. This ability probably evolved so that the mole can identify even the smallest food and avoid having to chase its victims. It feeds mainly on aquatic or terrestrial insects, mollusks, larvae and worms. If it had to chase its food, it would use up more energy than the energy contained in the potential catch.
